Internship in 8ON8 evaluation of the experience

In 8ON8’s internship unknowingly has been more than three months, this three months of time I learned a lot. I experience a deep point is: theory and practice to combine. In fact, many things in school when I have studied, but know are the theory, know the operation steps, but not much practice, and even did not consider to follow these steps to do, there will be many problems and how to solve these problems. I think holistically when I encounter problems and don’t allow my mind to be limited.

Through my modesty, diligence and good learning, I pay attention to the combination of theory and practice, and I can effectively apply the classroom knowledge I have learnt in the actual work, listen carefully to the guidance of senior staff, and listen to the work suggestions made by others with an open mind. I have shown a strong desire for knowledge and have been able to observe carefully, experience first-hand, think independently, analyse comprehensively and use my knowledge flexibly to solve the practical difficulties encountered in my work. The following is my self-evaluation of this three-month internship.

The following is my self-evaluation of this three-month internship.

  1. to pay attention to the colleagues around me, pay attention everywhere in the work, learn more and think more, so that I can integrate into our company faster.
  2. help to complete the work explained by the superior leadership, more thinking, more for the sake of others, as well as the work should improve their own efficiency, do not waste time.
  3. think well at work, find that there are problems with some work, communicate with colleagues first, share your own ideas for solutions with colleagues, solve those that can be solved, and submit those that cannot be solved to higher level managers, while offering your own opinions for reference.
  4. Answer questions asked by colleagues enthusiastically. I also need to think about and give results to other interns’ questions and be patient in giving my own way of dealing with them. I believe that the company is a group, not a one-person affair, so it is important to learn to get along with colleagues and to work together efficiently.

I have also worked hard to improve my drawing skills with the software. I used to be very unskilled in the use of the software and it took me a long time to draw CADS. In addition, I have learnt and learned more about fabrics and what clothes are suitable for them, which I think is a very practical knowledge for me and will be very useful in my future studies.

All in all, after three months of internship, I have continuously improved my business level and overall quality, and have a basic understanding of the daily operation of the company, in the future I will redouble my efforts to correct my shortcomings and explore my potential. Through this period I have learned a lot and feel that I have grown a lot. It has enriched my knowledge and broadened my horizons. Internship is a process that requires our constant accumulation and updating, as well as our persistence.

Week11 07/06-11/06

This is the 11th week of my internship and time has gone by really fast, almost two months ago. For me, life is a learning process, and although I get up early every day, I don’t feel tired at all. Perhaps it is meaningful to learn something new and to enrich my days. I’ve been doing my internship for a while now, and I’ve gone from being excited at the beginning to being a bit uncertain, wondering if this kind of work is what I want and if it’s suitable. I feel that time is a scary thing and I am afraid of what I will achieve after the internship, whether it will be a successful leap after this or whether I will be a social person from now on, and that I will have to take on more responsibilities in the future.

My main job this week was to work on a flash shop, a collaboration with a buying shop that required a small offline event and the launch of our co-branded collection, which required our design department to work with other departments to complete the project. I didn’t have the pleasure of being involved as the co-branded items were made before my internship, but I was still responsible for doing the poster artwork, and some of the graphics for the campaign. We had to wait until after work to go to the offline shop to set up, and it was already late at night when we went there. It was a very happy experience.

Week10 31/05-04/06

This is my tenth week and compared to the previous week, this week has been a little bit easier and less busy. So after work we have more time to do our own things and we usually choose to go for exercise when we get off work. Even though I’m a bit tired from work, at least I can do something I like to do as a way to relax.

This week I made a lot of sample garments, due to the high demand of the design, it required many revisions and adjustments, from the pattern to the craftsmanship to achieve the final standard. I cut a lot of fabric this week, there are a lot of different fabrics, different bits of a garment need different fabrics, there is also the need to iron the lining and so on, it is a very tedious process, at the beginning there are some small mistakes, but gradually I feel that as long as you are careful, it is not very difficult, the main thing is to be attentive. I also learnt a lot of techniques from the pattern maker this week, such as how to hem a garment to make it look better, how to sew it without stitches, etc. These small details are often the most important for patience. I am very happy with my progress and thankful to myself for trying to overcome the difficulties in the first two days.

Week9 24/05-28/05

This is my ninth week on placement and it’s still a busy week as I continue to work on the development of the new season in the design department, completing the last two weeks of drawing and colouring designs and finishing the CAD.

This week took me back to the fabric hunting and collecting fun fabrics that I used to do with my classmates every term in Year 1, and it made me miss last year and want to go back to London soon.

I spent the week collecting samples of all kinds of fabrics and bringing them back to the office to discuss and compare with my colleagues. I think it was a really interesting process and I enjoyed it a lot.

It’s been half a month since we started the development of the new season and I’m slowly learning about the whole process, which is not quite the same as what I learned in school, probably because of the market. After that, I have to learn to balance. Only in this way can a brand develop.

Week8 17/05-21/05

This is my eighth week of internship and I’ve gotten very used to it. I didn’t realise that I’ve been interning for two months now and I already know the company’s system very well, and I get along very well with my colleagues in the company. They are all very nice and helpful and help me out with small problems, I’m very lucky that I can meet such colleagues and we work together in a very good atmosphere, which makes me feel very important and happy every day at work.

This week I continued to work on the development of the new season in the design department, last week I drew a lot of designs and tried to colour them in, this week I needed to draw them into CAD, although I had learnt to draw with the software at school, I had some difficulties in using it formally, but I tried to learn and find information on my own, I completed a lot of work successfully and my proficiency in the software is getting better and better. This is probably because practice makes perfect, and the internship is also a continuous learning process. Not all of our efforts are recognised and that’s why so many people don’t get their way. But I believe that God is fair and our efforts will be rewarded unless we don’t work hard enough. So don’t give up too early unless you go on and you don’t know what you are going to encounter next.

I’ve done some important work this week to support my colleagues in the design department, although it’s small things, it’s very rewarding for me and my own software skills have improved this week.

Week7 10/05-14-05

This is the seventh week of my internship. This week it’s the same design work over and over again. Sometimes we feel that time goes by slowly, but then again time always passes without us realising it. Before I know it, it’s been seven weeks since I arrived here. It has been a tough but rewarding seven weeks. After such a long time, I feel like I am getting into the swing of my internship, both in terms of work and life.

This week our design department has started development for the new season and I’m excited to be involved and learn the whole process from the ground up. I was responsible for colouring a lot of sketches this week, which took me back to my student days when I used to do a lot of sketches for each project and try out the development process by trial and error. It’s also easy to run out of patience in this process. Often your style doesn’t match the brand’s and it’s impossible to make something that is completely your own and needs to fit the brand’s tone. I don’t really like that, but I know it’s a process that needs to be honed in on, not every designer can do exactly what they like, it still needs to be integrated with the market.

During the week I was very happy that I completed a lot of colouring drafts, and in the constant bonding and communication with my leader, we worked together on a small part of the work and got some recognition. If one screw-up goes wrong, it can affect the overall progress. As an employee of the company, try to get the job done as well as you can while you are a screw and then do what you can.

Week6 05/05-08/05

This is my sixth week of placement and as this week is Labour Day in China, I only have to work for 3 days, it is a relatively relaxed week and everyone is immersed in the joy of the holiday.

This week was spent finishing up work on AW21, continuing to complete tasks in the production department and sorting out the fabric usage for AW21 as well as taking stock of the new season’s sample stock, trying to complete the whole of AW21 before the holidays and starting SS22 development after the holidays.

During this enjoyable week, I have gradually come to appreciate the joy of working and the sense of achievement that comes from working with colleagues to complete the whole project. All these experiences were gained during the internship and I finally understood why it is important to do an internship before we actually enter the society. It is because the knowledge we are taught at school is limited and it is only in the real world that we can learn and experience more. And these are experiences that we can’t buy with any amount of money. Because it is ours alone and will not be forgotten with the passage of time.

Week5 26/04-30/04

This is the fifth week of my internship. I have been doing my internship for more than a month, and I am gradually getting used to the daily routine of the company, and I am gradually overstepping from school to society, which I think is the path that every university student must go through, and I need to work hard to adapt and overcome.

In the fifth week of my internship, I returned to the design department and finished the AW21 show, we started to make some commercial styles and started production. The most important thing for our whole company in this week is to match the production work, there are more than 300 pieces in the new season, we need to ensure the production process of each piece, from every detail to the date of getting the big goods, we need to confirm each one of them, this is also something I have never touched before.

I think from having an idea to drawing a design and then producing it, a small piece of clothing needs to go through a lot of hurdles, each step and process is indispensable, and it really takes a lot of people to get the clothes into our hands.

The production sessions lasted for three and a half days and the other interns and I all benefited greatly from the experience and cherished the opportunity.

Week4 19/04-23/04

This is the fourth week of my internship. After a busy fashion week and showroom, this week has been less hectic in comparison and back to a normal routine.

As the design department has come to an end this week, I have been assigned to the PR department to help out with some of the work. At the beginning I was very confused and had no idea what I was doing or what the department was doing, but by the end of the first day I had a good idea.

The PR department is similar to the marketing department and I am mainly responsible for helping the leader to manage and arrange the loan and return of samples. Arranging the loan and return of samples for the shoot will help to showcase the brand and raise awareness of the brand. In addition to this work I also help with the brand’s social media accounts and update the official brand account.

This was a new challenge for me as I had never worked in marketing before, but over the week I got used to the work and enjoyed it. I think the design department and the marketing department are two completely different jobs, although both are in designer brands, the work is very different. I have learnt a lot in the process and understand that the operation of a brand is also very important.

Week3 12/04-16/04

This is the third week of my internship. The AW21 show ended last week and the showroom for the new season started immediately afterwards, which was a new blind spot for me, as I had only heard about it before and had not experienced it myself.

It was also a busy week as we worked together to set up the showroom, iron and hang our new collection for the season and set up the showroom displays. During the week I went from being a designer’s assistant to a showroom salesperson, introducing the new season’s products to the buyers, from fabrics to craftsmanship to prices, helping with fittings, recommending similar products, and sharing matching pieces. It was a new experience for me, feeling the difference between each position and the need to work as a team to make the brand better.
